Repairing Holes in Wooden Houses before You Paint then Sand
Homeowners would enjoy it if your wooden home did not require much more than a little bit of home maintenance. Only scrape and caulk some, toss down some sheeting for paint drips, and roll on some layers of outdoor acrylic paint. Maintaining your house is more difficult. Rather than easy, you may need to patch the wooden facings of your house.
This house of mine had to have quite a bit of work. The galvanized metal near the roof gutters leaked and permitted rain to penetrate the wood behind the eve. As the house aged, the house’s wooden surface here shrunk and the paint fell away. This repair I wanted to do on my own. It did not seem like regular wood filler would do the job. My friend down the block repaired his wooden home frequently in an endless battle those darn flying termites. Sam’s repairs stood the test of time. I asked him his secret.
Fix Wood Holes with the Auto Repair Filler Called Bondo then Use Cordless Wood Working Power Tools to Sand
He said a contractor had recommended that automobile filler called Bondo to repair cracks in the wood. To learn more look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bondo_(putty) Bondo was great for car dents. Bondo was heavy and durable. Bondo could be planed. When he brought up using this auto filler, It was obvious that repairs done this way would work. Using Bondo, the trick is to fill in the large holes in layer after layer with a lot applied first and then thinner layers at the end. You can even make nice sharp corners, if you use wood molding and wax paper. When sanding and finishing prior to painting all you need to do is to use one of the discount power sanders that can sand quickly.
For those of you who own a wood deck, consider the fact that you could also use Bondo to fill in gouges in the planks of your wood deck. It comes in handy, when you are refinishing a redwood deck. Note the fact that Bondo finishes with a reddish hew and this will be obvious, if you only use a light colored water proofing on a wooden deck. If you intend to seal a wooden deck that has Bondo, just cover it with a dark stain. Finally it is not necessary to go to an automotive store for Bondo. Just look for Bondo at Home Depot or Lowes. You probably would also like to know that my house wood fixing job still looks great after several years.
